Welcome to the Smart Charge by RiDERgy Podcast. This is Claudio Geyken, founder and CEO of RiDERgy. This is your show to learn about all things energy management and smart charging innovation for electric vehicles and fleets.

Hello. My name is Claudio Geyken and welcome to the Smart Charge by RiDERgy Podcast. A bit about me: I'm an energy engineer, studied mechanical engineering at KIT in Karlsruhe, but then quite quickly decided on renewable energy and really found my passion for the energy transition back in 2004. I combined my passion for entrepreneurship with InnoEnergy. Before I get to InnoEnergy and that experience, briefly about my other, not purely technical background. These are the languages I speak fluently. My father is

from Munich, I grew up in Berlin. My mother is Italian. I'm Parisian – I basically grew up with French from childhood, with a French education path, a bit in Belgium and then a French-language high school in Berlin. And you have to know English

anyway.

Right.

So, just that much about it. InnoEnergy really opened my eyes to entrepreneurship by giving me contact with the entrepreneurs in their portfolio. InnoEnergy has been an investor in many start-ups – and still is. Wattelo is well known in Germany, Northvolt is a very well-known story, or FlexiDAO. Just a few sentences about Northvolt: I witnessed when Peter Carlsson came from Nevada from the Tesla Gigafactory and pitched to us at our

TBB and said how many 20, 30 gigafactories Europe would need – and he would build the first one. InnoEnergy was one of the first to believe in him. After that came Volkswagen and many large corporations and banks. And FlexiDAO started with a blockchain solution that was supposed to make the energy of electric vehicles more verifiable, then pivoted and is now one of the leading providers of 24/7 energy certificates, among others together with Google and Microsoft. I've witnessed many such stories. And energy is a tough sector

if you want to start a business there. You need to know regulation very well, understand the business models that are possible, and the technology isn't trivial either. That's why I decided to tackle this with RiDERgy. The biggest topic in the 2020s, when we started, was and still is flexibility: How do we manage to consume energy when there's plenty of electricity available from wind and solar, while at the same time the grids aren't overloaded and especially the batteries

are also available. This requires more data, more AI, more software integration that you bring to market – and through smart charging you naturally play a role. I capitalized the "DER" in RiDERgy. It's about Distributed Energy Resources. We want to enable this to happen not just centrally controlled, but also in a distributed manner, and to manage the transactions between different stakeholders – whether that's electric vehicles, battery storage or PV. We started building products, and

we're now already working with larger corporations. We're very pleased that there's so much interest in the market, both here in Germany and in Europe. And globally we're now about to expand. Anyone interested in learning more about RiDERgy can follow us on our LinkedIn page and feel free to message me. How did this podcast come about? I'm a big podcast listener of technology and business topics.

Spotify says with 18,000 minutes last year I'm among the 0.5% of those who listen to podcasts the most – here in Germany both well-known podcasts like Energiezone and Die Lage, but also Acquired and many other international ones with topics around e-mobility that I enjoy. One topic I always felt was a bit short-changed: the issues that concern us at the intersection between the mobility and energy transition. That's why we want to talk more about it here – in this podcast with fleet managers, but

also solution providers, entrepreneurs, large corporates and those who shape regulation. This podcast will cover business, technology and regulation. There are many topics: for example the GDPR, the Data Governance Act, the Clean Energy Package and how it comes to the member states, the digitalization amendment and much more. But also technology: cybersecurity, software integration, API interfaces, protocols like OCPP and ISO 15118 – that gets exciting too when you deal with technology and

software, but also power electronics, AC/DC charging stations and various battery storage systems. And the business world: What use cases are there? Where can you capture potential? Self-consumption optimization, electricity markets, electricity grids, reduced grid charges, energy sales – and not just in Germany and Europe, but worldwide as well. One example: I found Ethiopia quite interesting, that starting this year only electric vehicles will be registered there. That means you can be inspired by other countries about what's possible and how this can work in

supposedly more difficult situations as well.

Yes, beyond that: Who will be guests? Well, I've already mentioned a few. Primarily people who can also be here in the studio on site, so that the quality is best – here in Berlin-Mitte at the German Energy Agency. Thanks for letting us be here. But if it's really not possible, then we'll try to have video connections as well. Especially people who know their stuff, are experts in the topic and also eloquent. We also plan to use AI. As RiDERgy

we use AI in all sorts of ways. Different languages – perhaps here too via AI. Lex Fridman is well known as a podcaster. He also did an episode in Spanish, even though he doesn't speak Spanish, with his voice. So there are all kinds of ways we can enrich this podcast further, with transcription and so on. We also want to make it a bit community-driven. If you have any ideas, please get in touch with me. We're trying not just to

make it a podcast, but really a community that can exchange ideas. We're open to any idea for that. If you want to get an overview of how things were in the past and what interviews I've already done, please also check out 'Energy Change Agents' – available on Spotify. That's a podcast where I've already interviewed some of the people I mentioned. We'll be releasing the first episodes soon. So please subscribe to this channel, so

you can download them straight away. Then you'll always be able to listen even without an internet connection. First of all, thank you for following us, and let's stay in touch.
